Same Same But Different

Our first “home” for the trip

Ok, here goes. So far Heather has been the witty, effusive, creative force on this blog. Time I started to add something hopefully a wee bit entertaining.

10 years ago we came across this saying in SE Asia and I think it is very relevant to our little travel endeavour. But first, for those who don’t know, a slight personal recap.…

When we returned from the three of us doing our RTW trip in 2012, I knew there would be some kind of sequel. We dabbled with it in 2016 in Europe, but I was only able to escape work for 6 weeks. When I went back, I did the quick math for how much runway I had left at work before possible retirement, and knew I couldn’t make it without another break.

Initially this was going to be different. Maybe 3-4 places where we would set up and live for several months at a time. I figured 9 months off, 3 different locales.

Well, I was right about the 9 months, but as plans do they tend to change and here we are on a RTW2 trip with many countries and many stops (but in fairness to the initial vision, we will be setting up shop in Paris for 6 weeks).

So lots the same (but still a bit surreal for now).I get to partner with Heather who is so awesome at being great at all the things I am not (full credit to her for this awesome initial landing spot in Sanur). We get to go, see and do cool things once again that may be a wee bit out of our comfort zones from time to time. We’ll experience what’s it’s like to live out of a backpack (ok, it’s a carryon piece of luggage but you get the idea). We will travel in time (I know it’s just time zones but indulge me) and experience whatever else comes our way.

The different part is easy. Chloe is now an adult and has her own life, so she’s back home looking after the house, the dogs and whatever else comes on that front. Not having her along for this ride makes me very appreciative of being able to do the first trip with her. It’ll be great to see her again in Greece in June. And I am very thankful for all that she will be tackling over the next months to allow her parents to indulge in their wanderlust.

So here we go. The first massive plane ride is a memory and we are in Bali, about to head to Gilli Air Island. If you can, spare a positive thought for us tomorrow as we do the 3.5 hour ferry ride. Calm waters would be so nice. Now it’s off to check how many Gravol are considered “ok” to take!

Update 19:57 local time….at Irish bar for dinner. Music good. Drinks going down well. Notified that due to bad weather our boat to Gilli Air is leaving 90 minutes earlier. Debate if this is good or bad.
