Travel Tips – Bathroom etiquette in SE Asia

A few helpful tips if you’re thinking of travelling around here:

The little hose beside the toilet and the garbage nearby have functions that should not be ignored. The waste management system is delicate and toilet paper does not go in the toilet – ever. Give yourself a little cleaning spray and dry off with toilet paper that you then put in the little garbage can.

The bathroom often is an all-in-one situation so water from the shower goes everywhere. Our best advice – keep the toilet lid closed at all times. The water usually dries quickly

On the islands, the showers are often open-air. Enjoy the fun of it and turn on the light before you go in to give the little creatures time to scatter.

This little guy was too scared to move. I left the room, turned off the lights, turned it back on and it was gone.

In public toilets, if you don’t find toilet paper in the stall, there may not be any at all (always carry tissues in case), or there may be some in the main area, before entering the stalls. Just grab some before you go into a stall.
