So Glad We Fit in Madrid

People often ask us how we plan for a 9 month trip. The most common questions are: Do you plan it all in advance? How do you decide where to go? How do you get time off work? How do you afford it? I’m not going to answer all the questions now but I will address one – Deciding where to go!

We decided on a few things in advance, either because it was important to us and we wanted to make sure it happened or we thought it might get booked up. The very first thing we organized was our upcoming 6 weeks in Paris. We chose Paris because we wanted to work on our french and Paris is where we were when we were inspired to take our first long term trip and it holds a special place in our hearts.

We chose to start with SE Asia because we wanted to spend less to start. We chose Jordan because we had thought about going there in 2011/12 but couldn’t fit it in. Morocco came up because Paul had a dream of standing ankle deep in the Sahara. We chose Portugal because it was close to Morocco and on the way to Paris.

Spain was not an advanced thought. We came to Spain solely because my sister Patty was starting her European adventure here in Madrid and we thought, since we were pretty close by, it would be cool to see her. We arrived a couple of days before her and although we only spent 1 full day together, we managed to see quite a lot! We are so glad we fit in Madrid!

We met Patty at the airport. We were both very happy to see each other!
The buildings are spectacular!!! Just walking down the street is a beautiful site!!!
A beautiful rose coloured church tucked in beside all the other buildings.
Posada del peine – a hotel near Plaza Major, first opened in 1610 and shut in the 70s but reopened 2004.

There are so many squares and parks for people to enjoy!

Plaza Major
Park near Plaza Espagna
I can’t even remember where this was but the lights and the crowds in the plaza at 10:00 pm that we passed on our tapas tour brought me joy!
San Jerónimo el Real
El Retiro Park
librarians on a book chair!
The Palace
Just a cheeky little statue we noticed!
And the Murals…!!!

All too soon, it was time for Paul and I to head to Paris and say goodbye to Patty. We really loved Madrid – what a wonderful city- and especially loved our time with my sister Patty.

Fortunately, this is not the last time we will see her on the trip so it’s not audios but nos vemos pronto!

  1. The librarians on the book chair is so good. Please put a copy of that up at school.
Thank you for these beautiful photos of Madrid. I am warming up to going there.
