Greece is the word (part 2)

We had such a wonderful time at Dimitra Hotel on Agia Prokopios with the family (14 of us anyway), that moving on to Santorini with 5 in the group seemed like a good transition for Paul and I before being on our own once again.

The santorini 5 and Sam, who, with Cathrine and Fred, saw us off at the port.

We only had 1 full day on this iconic island, so we took full advantage of the first half day by walking the 10+km from our place in Fira to Oia, the town most often photographed for Santorini travel ads.

Fira – this picture does not properly show the crowds of people who are usually around this tourist filled town.

Our walk began and ended with all 5 of us but Tegan and Carys took an extra jaunt out to Skaros Rock. I guess the oldies were faster than they thought as they didn’t catch up to us until we were sitting down for dinner in Oia.

We started the walk around 5:30 and got into Oia just as the sun was setting. It was hotter than we expected but definitely well worth the effort. We passed small churches, quaint towns, fancy cave hotels and hillside abodes, photoshoots and weddings.

The following day took us all in different directions. Carys and Tegan took a boat tour to the volcano and mud hot springs, Rick walked down to the old port alongside the donkeys and then found a seaside town to test out some local beer.

Paul and I treated ourselves to a yummy breakfast with a view and then found a beach (Perivolos) and enjoyed a little time on an oceanside lounger.

We took advantage of being in such a beautiful spot for the sunset and seeing the lights turn on in the evening and ate our last dinner as a group before the 2 remaining cousins went off for a final night out together.

Short and sweet, Santorini was a perfect way to complete our Greece family adventure.

We are so happy that our North Vancouver bar chat last fall about the possibility of a family reunion actually came to be. We missed those who couldn’t make it and thought of them often. I wonder where in the world we can next meet up. Somewhere with groove and meaning and expresses the way we’re feeling… Greece was the word!
