Sukhothai- Thailand’s 1st Capital

We really wanted to visit at least one place between Chiang Mai and Bangkok on this trip, as last time we took a night train and scooted by it all. We were waffling between Sukhothai and Ayuthaya but once we heard Sukhothai was not as busy and was the 1st capital, our decision was made.

We arrived at night and took a little stroll around our neighbourhood.
The same bridge with the monks accepting alms in the morning.
We thought we would catch the sunrise, but it was a misty morning.

The sun soon came out and we began our exploration around the Sukhothai Historical Park.

For height perspective – Paul is 188 cm tall.
Our guest house loaned us these clunky little bicycles. We loved our perfect little accommodation here!
This sweet little pup lived at our guest house. He would give a few little barks and then, tail wagging, come over to great us. He was one of the lucky ones!
Most of the dogs we saw were street dogs who, from what we saw and heard, often have people who feed them and they will hang around a particular spot and get some care and attention. These pups have found some shade near the market.

We also met a great character who owned the most popular restaurant in town. He is a retired Englishman who, about 5 years ago, wandered around Thailand looking for a restaurant to purchase and run. He wound up in Sukhothai and loves it. Unfortunately we didn’t get any pictures of him.

We really did love the time we spent in this magical place. It was stinkin’ hot but we managed the heat by retreating to our lovely air-conditioned room now and again and had several showers during our 2 night stay.
