Our final stop on the SE Asia leg of our trip was Koh Lanta. Another Island that we visited and loved 11 years ago and it did not disappoint us! It remains a beautiful, chill retreat which we explored a little more this time than the last.
Paul in his Island version of “biking gear”, ready to explore. On our first morning here we walked to the south end of klong kong beach where we are staying. When the tide is out, the swimming opportunities are limited.Until you reach the very end of the beach and find this little cove. Unless we were heading out on a tour or other activity, our mornings would start here for a little swim. Beside our swim spot was a natural “marina” On the way back, we would stop and enjoy a morning coffee – usually at the same spot. Funny how we find our routines.Watching the Superbowl game at 6:30 am was surprisingly fun! We searched around the island the day before and discovered this Irish Pub that wasn’t too far from our place (on the scooter). We rode out to the National Park and discovered this beautiful beach and a little trail up past the lighthouse. We went on a snorkelling tour one day that started out a little crazy! To begin with, our pick up was late and we had the fastest drive in the back of a pick up truck we’ve ever experienced! (And yes, it was a little scary). And then, when picking up a few people from a beach, they “beached” the boat. Many hands helped to get us off the beach and we were again, on our way.The water was clear and we saw some amazing sea life – colourful, patterned, big and small fish (even the shy clown fish), a reef shark, an octopus, beautiful coral, large clams, sea anemones, sea slugs,.. it was amazing and beautiful!!One of the snorkeling locations. We went to Koh Ha and Koh Rok.On another scooter day we went to Old Town to check it out.3 fishing boats just off the pear. – big, medium and small.A pagoda in Old Town.We kept going past Old Town to Pirate Beach.Fresh coconut juice is the best! And after drinking the juice, they always provide a spoon to scoop out the meat. The view was spectacular too!!We took a “cooking class with Mon” on our last full day. It was lots of fun and we ate some delicious meals (the papaya salad proved a little too spicy for me (even though I only put 1/4 of a fresh chilli in my dish. 🌶️ )
And many of our days looked like this at some point:
A short walk to the beach from our bungalowFinding a shady spot is key! By the end of the day the lounges are all over the place, depending on the angle of the sun.Phra Ae BeachAnd most days ended something like this – a caipirinha in hand, watching the sun set, lounging on a chair in front of our place.Dinner followed by an evening beach walk was another routine. And somewhere along the way we’d stop for a few minutes to check out the fire show. The fire performance would be in front of 1 restaurant or another each night.
We are so grateful for our time in SE Asia and especially happy that we ended our time here, with a longer stay on Koh Lanta. We have already been discussing when we might return for a visit.
And, although bittersweet, it is time to pack our bags and move on. We are heading to a country we’ve never been to and an experience that will be different from any we’ve had so far. 🛫🇯🇴
