Mt. Nebo, Madaba & Karak

After our little retreat from our travels in The Dead Sea, we hit the ground running, spending 1 night in Madaba and another in Rabbah, on the outskirts of Karak. We don’t usually travel this quickly but we didn’t want to just fly by and miss some interesting sites as we headed towards Petra.

Mt. Nebo was our first stop. It is the site where Moses is said to have seen the promised land.

“Moses’ view of the Promised Land towards ancient Gilead, Judah, Jericho and the Negev..”

It was very hazy so we did not see much of ‘the promised land’.

We headed down the hill (with a Jordanian hitchhiker along for the ride – there may be a story about that later), to Madaba.

Madaba has one of the largest Christian communities in Jordan and is well known for it’s many Byzantine-era mosaics. It is a very tourist friendly town and may, in retrospect, have been a softer place to start than Amman.

We climbed to the top of the bell tower. Very narrow and steep hading up and windy at the top!
Delicious meal with a nice view of the mosque

We then carried on along the road to Karak, best known for the Karak Castle which the Crusaders built in 1142 and was taken over by Saladin’s muslim armies in 1183.

Outer wall – I imagine it would have been VERY difficult for enemies to get into this castle!!
Inner wall
The view is spectacular but don’t get too close to the edge. Fencing is optional here!

We stayed nearby in Rabbah that night, in a super cute little farm stay. Paul went out for a walk after dinner and met a group of kids playing soccer. They were very curious about him!
