Falling for Lisbon

We loved Lisbon!! Perhaps being our first city in Europe on our trip may have had something to do with it, but we feel it may be more than that.

Up at Castelo Sao Jorge

The city of 7 hills (only!!?? I didn’t count but it felt like we had to walk up or down a little or a lot, all the time).

This funicular had broken down. Thankfully we had not planned on taking it.

We stayed in the Alfama District, with it’s winding streets and alleyways and stairs, in a wee little apartment with crazy steep stairs and a little courtyard for our happy hour .

On the way back home
The last turn – we made it home!
A little bar in the neighbourhood.
The final climb to get home.
We played crib or backgammon in the courtyard most evenings after our days of exploring Lisbon.

We walked and climbed and rode the rails and got lost and then found our way again. We LOVED it so much!!

Praça do Comércio
Miradouro de Nossa Senhora do Monte – I had seen this one from the castle and Rossio square and almost anytime I looked up. It was a hike to reach it but the view was amazing!
Belem Tower – yup- pretty windy!
Exploring Belem. Eating a Pastéis de Belém, Padreo dos Descobrimentos, Jerónimos Monastery, MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology),
We did ride this one up the hill.
In tram #28. And my new hat (had a hard time replacing the cherished one I left on a bus in Bangkok but I think this one may be even better)
Tram #28 – locals may use it to get around the city but because it passes by so many of the iconic sites it’s usually packed with tourists.
Pink Street – Rua Nova do Carvalho. Once the heart of Lisbon’s red light district, it is now a place to come for clubs and a fun night out.
So many murals!
So many churches! The Igreja de São Roque – the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world, and one of the first Jesuit churches anywhere.
The tiled buildings are incredible
The Portuguese know their tiles!
And the patterns in the streets are 🤩
Inside the Pantheon
Sunset from the Castelo Sao Jorge
Rossio Station – heading to Sintra
Pena Castle – we were too late to head inside but had a good walk around the gardens.
Quinta da Regaleira
The inverted tower (Initiation Well) looks like a well but is accessible by a spiral stair that goes down to one of the tunnels.

We are very grateful that Lisbon was our first European stop. We spent 5 amazing days here. We not only had a chance to recharge after our busy Morocco tour but also to get into the groove of being in Europe. We are looking forward to exploring Portugal a little more with our friend Madeleine, who is flying over from New York to spend a week exploring Portugal together.

Cheers!
