We were in the midst of travel planning at home last Fall when there was a Gallilee family meeting that I was unable to attend. I remember getting a text from Heather with a “what do you think about Greece” message? I believe my answer was a simple “yes.” From there the planning moved forward for a Gallilee family trip in June.
For us this was great as it gave us something special to look forward to upon leaving Paris. Unfortunately some, including Chloe, were unable to make it. The rest of us gathered in Athens, with the exception of Quinn and Sepehr (who caught up to us on Naxos), for a Greek warmup of wine, food, and ancient ruins (and a pedicure).
First view of the AcropolisHeather checking out the theatre (once we did the climb)Family pose in front of the Parthenon Evening debrief at 360 bar in Athens (thanks Tegan!)The Acropolis at night
The next morning brought a very early 5AM alarm as we all trudged out to the ferry terminal to get the 7:20AM ferry to Naxos (a 5 hour journey)
Making our way to the ferry (first step – find the metro! Huge kudos to Patty who did a test run the day before so we knew what to do when it was go time)About to disembark on Naxos with a few other folks who apparently had the same travel plans as us.
(ugh- turns out when you accidentally press discard your blog work does just vanish)
Attentive readers of the blog may notice that Heather is rocking her rain jacket. There’s a reason for that, as our initial entry to Naxos was in the rain. Thankfully the Hotel Dimitra recognized a great customer service opportunity, and sent a van to get us from the dock (rather than us waiting for the bus in the rain).
First night walk on the local beach. Heather’s brother, Rick, led us through a pretty smelly area to which he dropped the quote of the trip….”this smells like money” (he’s in waste water management in Vancouver)Poolside at the hotel. Simply outstanding service, rooms, and breakfasts!Poolside happy hour with Heather and her sister PattyBeachside was also good for a family picnicAnd for checking out an evening sunsetTurns out there was a better spot for the sunsetHeather and I went out and about on an ATV to explore the island. Here’s Quinn and Tegan getting ready for an outdoor cinema showing of Mamma Mia. We also were able to watch “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” while we were thereAnd before we knew it, it was time to bid a farewell to our time on Naxos. Some went home, some to France, some to England and some set sail for Santorini. But that’s for another blog post!
